There’s something a bit vulnerable about being photographed. Not the quick cell phone snap, or the cropped vacation photo, and not the “this will do for now” headshot from years ago. But being fully photographed with yourself front and center.
Every day I photograph those who are ready to show up fully for their business, their careers, and their stories. This inspired me to be seen as the today version of myself. Earlier this year, I booked a brand headshot session… not only because I needed new photos, but because I needed to see myself again.
What I didn’t expect, was for myself to be inspired during my own portrait session. In between running a business and all of life’s happenings, I realized I had stopped noticing myself with the same kindness I give my clients.
Through the same experience that I ask of all those who I photograph, I too felt exactly what everyone feels; the flutter of doubt, the second-guessing, the “do I really want to see myself closeup?”
But standing there, in the light, in my own skin, something shifted. I remembered who I was. I remembered that I matter too.
I realized I wanted to be seen as the woman I am today. Seasoned, strong, creative and always evolving.
And it reminded me why photographs aren’t “just pictures.” They’re proof. Proof of who we are right now. Proof that we showed up for our life.
But more importantly, current portraits gives you permission to show up to honor the chapter you are in right now. Don’t you agree?
