How to look your best for a new headshot.

It’s time for that updated headshot. More than ever your online presence matters. With social media savvy customers it only takes a few seconds for a potential customer to make a decision to become your new customer. But here are some quick tips to help you look your best.

1. Of course, hire a professional

To begin, the day of cell phone headshots is over. Putting your best business foot forward is having a high quality professional headshot to represent you and your business. As a professional photographer I know how good lighting and posing can bring out all your best features. You can then feel confident in using your headshot for all your online presence: website, social media, and marketing.

2. Polish your look

Take some time to really consider how you want to look in your headshot. Your attire should reflect your business you represent.

• First, pick your clothing. When choosing your clothing consider color. Even if you’re a black/white kinda person, consider clothing colors that are soft but compliment your skin tone. Also avoid busy patterns, checks or plaids. Of course, press your clothes.
• Equally important is good grooming. Get your hair cut a week before the photo shoot date, freshen your makeup before you step in front of the camera, and please, check your teeth.
• Finally, keep it simple. Do you need a suit/tie or will a casual shirt look more approachable? What message do you want to convey?

3. More than one pose

I often suggest to my headshot customers to consider choosing a longer photo session that will offer a change of outfits and posing for a variety of looks to choose from. Yes, you need a good profile photo, but what about your website ‘about’ page? Or a different look for your newsletter, social media posts and marketing materials? A variety of looks can give you fresh updated options to use with your on-going marketing efforts.
